A passionate appeal has gone to the Executive Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umar Bago to sympathize and Empathize with the existing pensioners in the State with a view to ameliorating their suffering.
The state Secretary of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Niger State chapter, Abdullahi Baba Sani made the plea in a letter to the Governor dated 15th March, 2024 which was made available to Newsmen in Minna.
Comr Baba Sani explained that the pensioners are really suffering as a result of Non- payment of their gratuity and retirement benefits.
He observed that retirement benefits are supposed to cushion the effect of hardships and provide comfort for retired civil servants immediately after retirement but the current trends has succeeded in subjecting pensioners to unbearable penuary leading to uncureably ailments and in some cases.
Speaking further, the union however listed some of the critical and fundamental benefits of the Senior citizens which includes the payment of gratuity, Consequential Adjustment Approved by the Federal Government since 2019, harmonization of Monthly pension and contributory pension scheme as well as arrears of wage awards among others.
The National Union of Pensioners, therefore asked the Niger State Governor to do the right thing in order to avoid industrial crisis and disharmony . While appealing to its members to cooperate and show understanding by allowing the union to pursue their legimate right.
