NIGER GOVERNMENT ENGAGES TRADITIONAL RULERS, ISLAMIC TEACHERS ON ALMAJIRI AND OUT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN

To ensure sanity in the state, the committee on Almajiri and out of school children set up by Farmer Governor Muhammad Umar Bago has engaged with traditional rulers various Islamic teachers and preachers to track the out of school syndrome among Almajiris in the state.

The chairman of the committee, Alhaji Shuaibu I.Gwada led other members of committee on a courtesy visit to the palace of Etsu Nupe in Bida.

The committee on Almajiri and out of school children which was set up early this year by Farmer Governor Muhammad Umar Bago was to cap the efforts on same by previous administration.

The Almajiri syndrome in northern Nigeria has become a humiliating and debilitating issues, perpetuating a cycle of poverty, unemployment and social vices.

Thousands of young boys, often sent away by their parents in search of Islamic education,end up on the streets begging for food and scraps.

This phenomenon has contributed to the growing problems of unemployment, drug abuse, hunger and poverty in the region.

It was against these back ground that Niger state governor deemed it necessary to set up the committee to address these issues.

While address the Etsu Nupe,the committee chairman, Alhaji Shuaibu Gwada said the number of these children that roam the streets rather than seeking knowledge in the true sense, stressing that it has contributed to the rise and to the effect that it poses serious social danger of insecurity in the country.

He said the committee and government concerned is that hoodlums and bandits can easily recruit the innocent folks into their fold.

Speaking separate,the committee secretary Datijo Usman and commissioner of information Binta mamman said for the avoidance of such unwholesome development,these call for engagement of traditional rulers and Islamic bodies in quest for a permanent solution.

Responding, the Etsu Nupe and chairman Niger state council of traditional rulers, Doctor Yahaya Abubakar acknowledged the visit by the committee, stressing that his door remains open for fatherly advice on the possible solutions.

The visit climax with a roundtable discussion with Islamic teachers and preachers Bida emirate.
