Following the alleged threat aimed 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party Peter Obi, the party has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene.
The request for Intervention was made by a prominent Labour party figure, Marcel Ngogbeheihas claiming that statements made by Felix Morka, National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represent not only a risk to Obi’s life but also a wider threat to democratic principles in the country.
In an open letter to President Tinubu, Ngogbehei, who also serves as the Director General of the Labour Party Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, expressed his concerns over what he termed Morka’s “inflammatory remarks.”
He warned that the comments extend beyond political rivalry, undermining the core values of free speech, political pluralism, and constructive criticism that underpin Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking further, Ngogbehei cautioned that the rhetoric directed at Peter Obi signifies a disturbing shift towards silencing opposition voices.
He said, “With all due respect, I write to you in my capacity as the Director General of the Labour Party Directorate of Mobilization and Integration.
“The Labour Party has stood firm and strong as the leading opposition party in Nigeria and we wish to express grave concern over the recent unguarded and threatening remarks made by Mr. Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Mr President, as a key leader in the opposition for many years, you and the APC were beneficiaries of the freedoms and protections afforded by Nigeria’s democratic system under the then President Goodluck Jonathan, which allowed you to challenge the status quo and ultimately ascend to power.”
